Cyclone Advisory Issued
As an intense cyclone looms over the Bay of Bengal, the IMD has issued a precautionary advisory for fishermen venturing into the sea off the coasts of north Odisha and West Bengal. According to Sunanda, Director of the IMD’s Visakhapatnam Cyclone Warning Centre, fishermen are urged to return by Thursday to avoid the risk of encountering adverse weather conditions.
- A low-pressure area is anticipated to form over the Southwest Bay of Bengal by May 22, further intensifying into a depression over the central Bay of Bengal by May 24.
- Coastal regions of northern Odisha and West Bengal are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by high winds during the period of May 23 to 24.
Impact on Multiple States
Apart from Odisha and West Bengal, the cyclone is expected to affect Maharashtra and Gujarat from May 23 to May 27, as per forecasts from the Met department. Consequently, heavy rainfall is predicted for Gujarat and Mumbai around May 28, 2024.

Until May 23, the weather office anticipates light rainfall in states including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and others. The IMD’s latest bulletin forecasts scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and other associated weather phenomena.
- Similarly, light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected in Karnataka, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Lakshadweep, and Telangana until May 23.

Kerala has recently witnessed heavy rainfall, prompting the state government to issue advisories for residents, particularly those in hilly and coastal areas. Instances of flooding have been reported in parts of Thiruvananthapuram city and its suburbs following heavy rainfall on the night of May 18.
