Colombo Weather Forecast for Asia Cup 2023 Final

As the highly anticipated Asia Cup 2023 final between India and Sri Lanka approaches in Colombo, all eyes are on the weather forecast. The Super Four stage of the tournament in Colombo faced concerns about rain interruptions, with even suggestions of shifting the location or criticism of the scheduling by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). However, after initial uncertainty, Colombo has witnessed decent weather and thrilling matches, leading up to the grand finale. But the question remains: will rain play spoilsport in the Asia Cup 2023 final?

Colombo Weather Forecast Today

While the Super Four encounter between India and Pakistan had to resort to a reserve day due to rain, and the match between Babar Azam’s Pakistan and Sri Lanka was reduced to 42 overs, the rest of the Asia Cup in Colombo remained relatively unaffected by rainfall. Credit goes to the diligent ground staff in Colombo who managed to minimize overs lost during rain delays.

Colombo Weather Forecast for the Asia Cup 2023 Final

According to AccuWeather, the weather forecast for Sunday in Colombo predicts a cloudy day with thundershowers in parts of the area in the morning and a couple of thunderstorms in the afternoon. There is a 90% probability of precipitation, with a 54% chance of thunderstorms. Thunderstorms are expected at 10 am local time, 1 pm, 6 pm, 8 pm, and 10 pm. With the match scheduled to begin at 3 pm local time, a delayed start is a possibility.

Rain Contingency Plan

In case the Asia Cup 2023 final faces rain interruptions, there is a provision for a reserve day on September 18 (Monday). If rain impacts the match on Sunday at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, the following measures will be taken:

Rain-affected Match

  • The number of overs will be reduced based on the amount of play possible before rain interruptions.
  • If rain halts the game before it reaches a conclusion, the match will be carried forward to the reserve day.

What Happens on the Reserve Day?

  • Should the match begin on Sunday but is halted by rain, the proceedings on the reserve day will resume from the point where they left off on Sunday.

Washed-Out Final Scenario

In the unfortunate event that both the scheduled match day and the reserve day are plagued by rain, both India and Sri Lanka will be declared joint winners. This wouldn’t be the first time that a multi-nation event final in Sri Lanka produces such a result. In 2002, during the Champions Trophy final, India and Sri Lanka were named joint winners after rain washed out the match.

The cricketing world eagerly awaits the Asia Cup 2023 final, hoping for an exciting contest and clear skies to crown the champion.
